Every family cruise starts with a countdown, a packing list, and a lot of excitement. But this cruise? It came with an extra challenge—and a whole lot more personalization.
My sister called me a few weeks before her family’s upcoming cruise vacation with a simple request:
“Can you help me make matching shirts for everyone?”
Of course, I said yes.
What started as a fun crafting project quickly turned into a full-blown cruise shirt production line. This wasn’t just any family vacation. During the trip, they would be celebrating her husband’s birthday, one son’s birthday, and her other son’s high school graduation. Each milestone deserved its own moment in the spotlight, so we decided every shirt would tell a different story.
First, we gathered our supplies. Out came the Cricut machine, rolls of heat transfer vinyl (HTV), Cricut Design Space, a trusty weeding tool, cutting mats, blank t-shirts, measuring tape, and the heat press. The dining room table transformed into what looked like a small custom apparel business overnight.
The design phase was where the real fun began.
We started with a cruise-themed family design that would tie everyone’s shirts together. Think cruise ships, palm trees, ocean waves, and a countdown to vacation mode. Then we customized each shirt to commemorate the individual celebrations happening during the trip.

The graduate’s shirt may have been my favorite. We incorporated his graduation year, a graduation cap graphic, and a special message recognizing his accomplishment. After all, graduating high school is a huge milestone, and what better way to celebrate than on a cruise ship surrounded by family?
Once the designs were finalized in Cricut Design Space, the cutting began. If you’ve ever worked with HTV, you know the process requires equal parts patience and determination. There was plenty of vinyl weeding, a few “please don’t tear” moments, and at least one instance of someone asking, “Are you sure this is supposed to look like that?”
Thankfully, the Cricut worked its magic.
After cutting and weeding each design, we carefully positioned the vinyl on the shirts and used the heat press to permanently apply every detail. Watching the designs come to life is always the best part. What starts as a digital file suddenly becomes something tangible that people can wear and enjoy.
By the end of the project, we had a collection of matching-yet-unique shirts that perfectly captured the purpose of the trip. They coordinated as a family set while still highlighting each person’s special celebration.
And let’s be honest—spotting your family in a crowded cruise terminal is a whole lot easier when everyone is wearing matching custom shirts.
Mission accomplished.
Now all that’s left is for them to board the ship, celebrate in style, and make memories that will last long after the suitcases are unpacked.
