I packed Half My Closet for a Caribbean Cruise... and Somehow Still Wore the Same Favorite Outfits
Every time I book a cruise, I make the exact same promise to myself:
“This trip is going to be different. I’m only packing what I actually need.”
And every single time…my suitcase laughs at me.
Our latest adventure began in **New Orleans**, where the vacation vibes started long before we stepped onto the ship. Between the incredible food, live jazz drifting through the streets, and trying not to wear powdered sugar from beignets as a fashion accessory, I was already in vacation mode.
Once we boarded, it was seven glorious days of sunshine, ocean views, endless food, and unforgettable stops in **Costa Maya, Belize, Roatán, and Cozumel**. Naturally, I packed enough outfits for what could have easily been a three-week vacation.
Did I need that many dresses?
Probably not.
Did I regret bringing them?
Not for one second.
Vacation Starts the Moment You Step on the Ship
Embarkation day is one of my favorite parts of cruising. Everyone is excited, the music is playing, frozen drinks are everywhere, and within fifteen minutes people are already debating whether pizza, tacos, or burgers should be their first vacation meal.
(I chose not to choose…and sampled more than one.)
I wore one of my favorite lightweight summer outfits that was comfortable enough for boarding but cute enough for those obligatory “We’re finally on vacation!” pictures. A pair of comfy sandals and a roomy tote bag carried me through the afternoon while I explored every deck like I had never seen a cruise ship before.
Sea Days: The Official Uniform is Whatever Makes you Happy
There is something magical about sea days,
No alarms.
No rushing to make it back to the ship before all aboard.
No excursions scheduled.
Just endless ocean views, a warm breeze, and absolutely nowhere you have to be.
Sea days quickly became my excuse to slow down. I’d grab a coffee in the morning, find the perfect lounge chair (which, let’s be honest, sometimes feels like an Olympic sport), and spend the day wandering from one part of the ship to another. One minute I’d be relaxing by the pool, the next I’d be checking out trivia, listening to live music, or convincing myself that walking to the buffet counted as exercise.
My go-to outfit for these relaxing days? A casual romper.
Seriously, if rompers aren’t already part of your cruise packing list, let me introduce you to your new vacation best friend. They’re lightweight, comfortable, easy to throw on over a swimsuit, and somehow always look put together with almost no effort.
And yes…I may have packed more rompers than I technically needed.
Costa Maya Had Me Feeling Like I was in a Travel Magazine
Costa Maya is bursting with colorful buildings, tropical flowers, and beautiful little streets that practically beg you to stop every few steps for another picture.
I slipped into a flowy floral dress that caught every ocean breeze perfectly. It looked effortless in photos…even if I was secretly concentrating on not tripping over the cobblestones while balancing an iced coffee in one hand and my shopping bag in the other.
Somehow, vacation dresses have magical powers. They make you look far more graceful than you actually are.
Belize Was Proof That Comfortable Can Still Be Cute
Belize was our adventure day, so practicality won.
I traded my dress for a lightweight tank, linen shorts, and my favorite white sneakers. Were they the most glamorous shoes in my suitcase?
Definitely not.
But after spending hours exploring, walking through town, and soaking in every moment, my feet reminded me that comfortable shoes deserve a little appreciation too.
I’ve officially reached the stage of life where stylish and comfortable are no longer negotiable—they’re a package deal.
Roatan Was Straight Out of a Postcard
If you’ve never been to Roatán, picture crystal-clear water, swaying palm trees, and every shade of turquoise you can imagine.
I wore one of my favorite maxi dresses with my most comfortable Crocs wedges, oversized sunglasses, and simple gold jewelry. It was one of those outfits that made me feel put together without trying too hard.
And let’s be honest…a good pair of sunglasses deserves at least half the credit for making vacation photos look fabulous.
They also do an excellent job of hiding the fact that you stayed up too late watching the late-night comedy show onboard or in my case, playing at the casino.
Cozumel Was the Perfect Grand Finale
By the time we arrived in Cozumel, I had fully embraced cruise life.
Wake up.
Eat breakfast.
Take pictures.
Eat again.
Browse local shops.
Find tacos.
Repeat.
I wore another breezy summer dress with flat sandals that were perfect for strolling through the markets. Comfortable enough for walking, cute enough for photos.
I also packed my bathing suit and my flip flops to enjoy swimming in the cenotes as if we were royalty.
Now that’s what I call a vacation win!
Then Came My Favorite Part...Dinner Every Night
As much as I love exploring the ports, there’s something special about getting ready for dinner on a cruise.
During the day, everyone is in swimsuits, cover-ups, and flip-flops. But once the sun starts to set, the ship transforms. Suddenly, elevators become mini fashion shows, staircases become photo studios, and everyone is dressed up for another amazing evening.
I loved changing into a different dress each night, adding a little jewelry, grabbing a cute clutch, and heading to dinner.
Some nights called for elegant floral dresses, while others were perfect for classic black dresses that never go out of style. The best part? I finally had an excuse to wear those shoes that spend most of the year waiting patiently in my closet.
Formal Night...Because Who Doesn't Love an Excuse to Dress Up?
Formal Night is easily one of my favorite cruise traditions.
It’s the perfect excuse to wear the dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion. I slipped into a beautiful evening gown, paired it with heels, sparkling jewelry, and a little extra confidence.
There’s something fun about seeing everyone dressed to the max while still knowing that someone in the buffet is probably wearing flip-flops.
After taking way too many photos around the grand staircase (because it’s practically a cruise requirement), we enjoyed an incredible dinner filled with appetizers, steak, seafood, decadent desserts, and plenty of laughter.
Let’s just say stretchy waistbands became much more appealing by the end of the week.
Already Dreaming About the Next Cruise
If this trip taught me anything, it’s that packing smart doesn’t mean sacrificing style.
A few beautiful summer dresses, a couple of versatile outfits, comfortable walking shoes, elegant heels for dinner, and accessories that work with everything made getting dressed one of the easiest parts of the vacation.
Although…
Will I still overpack next time?
Absolutely.
Because maybe *this* cruise will finally require that “just in case” dress that’s traveled thousands of miles without ever leaving its hanger.
