My Lifelong Love-Hate Relationship with the Scale

If you’re a Latina woman in your 30s or 40s, there’s a good chance you’ve had that relationship too—the one with the bathroom scale.

Mine and I have been in an on-again, off-again relationship for as long as I can remember. We’d have a few good weeks together, I’d start feeling confident, and then somehow a family barbecue, holiday tamales, tacos on Tuesday (and Wednesday…), or simply life would remind me why breaking up with carbs felt impossible. Before I knew it, I’d be right back where I started, wondering how I got there…again.

Then I hit my 40s, and it felt like my metabolism packed its bags and quietly moved out without leaving a forwarding address.

What used to take a few weeks suddenly took months. The weight became harder to lose, even harder to keep off, and honestly, it started affecting more than just my closet. It affected my energy, my confidence, and eventually my health.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I knew something had to change.

After a lot of research (and I’ll admit, plenty of skepticism), I decided to try tirzepatide injections. I had heard all the conversations about GLP-1 medications and wasn’t sure they were for me. I wondered if they were just another fad or if I was somehow “taking the easy way out.”

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This decision has truly been life-changing. I’ve lost over 50 pounds, my blood sugar is better managed, I have more energy than I’ve had in years, and I simply feel better living my everyday life. It’s not magic, and it still requires making healthier choices, but for the first time in a very long time, I feel like my body and I are finally on the same team.

I’ve also learned that lasting success isn’t about one single thing—it’s about building habits that support your health. Alongside tirzepatide, I’ve added a few targeted supplements specifically to support my nutrition while eating less on a GLP-1. These are in addition to the supplements I mention in my other post, and each one plays an important role in helping my body stay nourished and balanced:

  • Javvy Protein Coffee & Javvy Protein Creamer: Getting enough protein can be challenging when your appetite is lower, but it’s essential for maintaining muscle, supporting metabolism, and keeping you feeling strong. Being the coffee lover that I am, this is a great tasting addition that helps me meet my protein goals while enjoying my ice coffee every morning! So far I cant decide on a favorite flavor. I love them all!
  • Greens Supplement: I’ve been using Live it Up but also like Nutra Champs. When you’re eating less overall, it can be harder to get enough fruits and vegetables. This helps fill in those nutritional gaps with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Clean Simple Collagen: Supports skin, hair, nails, and joint health—especially important during weight loss when your body is going through changes. My favorites are Cherry Ice and Peach Mango flavors!
  • YU Probiotics: Gut health plays a big role in digestion and overall wellness, and probiotics help keep everything running smoothly (code: GOYU for 15%).
  • YU TrimFit: Supports metabolism and energy levels, helping you stay active and consistent with your routine. Drinking this before a workout gives me the energy I need when I’m not as excited about trying to reach my steps goal for the day (code: GOYU for 15%).
  • Nature’s Sunshine Chlorophyll: Helps support detoxification and can aid in digestion, which is helpful when your eating patterns shift. Lime Twist is by far my favorite flavor.
  • LMNT Electrolyte Drink Mix: Staying hydrated is key, and electrolytes help prevent fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps—especially when you’re eating less and potentially losing more fluids. I like to mix things up with this one and just get the variety pack.

This journey isn’t about becoming the smallest version of myself. It’s about becoming the healthiest version of myself—the one who has the energy to enjoy life, keep up with family, and feel comfortable in her own skin.

If you’re feeling frustrated because your body isn’t responding the way it used to, please know you’re not alone. Our bodies change, our hormones change, and sometimes we need a different approach than we did in our twenties.

There is no shame in asking for help. Whether that’s your doctor, a medication, better nutrition, or simply finding a routine that finally works for you.

Your story doesn’t have to look like mine. But if sharing mine helps even one woman realize that it’s never too late to take control of her health, then every step of this journey has been worth it.

Medical note: Tirzepatide isn’t appropriate for everyone and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. My experience is personal and isn’t a guarantee that others will have the same results.
