I used to think back-to-school shopping was easy. You grabbed some notebooks, pencils, a backpack, and called it a day.

Shopping for teenagers, I have quickly learned that I am no longer the decision-maker…I am simply the person holding the credit card.

And can someone please send me a Teen Slang Dictionary? Every shopping trip comes with words I’ve never heard before. They’ll tell me something “eats,” another thing is “mid,” and if I’m lucky, I might get a “that’s fire.” Meanwhile, I’m over here wondering if we’re talking about school supplies or ordering lunch.

The trends don’t stay still long enough for me to catch up. Just when I finally understand what’s in, it’s suddenly out. The shoes everyone had to have last semester? Nope. Those are old news.  Keeping up with teenage trends feels like chasing a moving target… while wearing flip-flops.
